    Sharing its name with the affiliated bookshop next door, Vulcan has gone for the "ye olde dynasty" look. The fact that the décor edges close to tacky is partially redeemed by the price of draught beer.

Long Long Ago Courtyard
    Part of the Nanluogu Xiang bar scene, the Long Long Ago Courtyard is a slightly excessive mix of East and West, but nevertheless is a fine place to relax. Try the Western menu by a former Kunlun Hotel chef.

Black Sesame Kitchen
    Black Sesame Seed Kitchen is a place well known to the expat community, and a restaurant I had been wanting to try. My chance finally arrived, and resulted in several unexpected surprises. The Kitchen is located in a courtyard of a small hutong. Difficult to find, the staff are very willing to come find you and bring you to the restaurant once you have reached the popular Nonlugoxiang street. The hutong itself looks very decrepit but the kitchen is surprising quaint. The inside is very homely with long black tables and an observable kitchen. A small space it adds to the communal dining experience.

Lucky Man
    A whiskey bar that isn't Japanese-run, but still has plenty of Japanese single malts, as well as a good selection of Scotch. It's more expensive than other whiskey bars, but there's nothing like it around Gulou. Customers can also order from the menu of skewered meats and other Japanese snacks.
