Exploring Indian Classical Dance
An Indian classical dance saloon will be launched at NCPA's Arts Libray from July 10 to July 11, 2011, presented by the tremendous Indian artist Ranjana Gauhar. She is a leading exponent of the Indian classical dance - Odissi, an ancient dance style which originated, centuries ago, in the temples of Orissa.
Odissi dance is one of the Indian classical dance forms which originated in the temples of Orissa. India has a long tradition of different classical dance forms which have flourished, declined (under foreign influences) and in modern times, been revitalized. Classical dance is understood to be the synthesis of body and mind becuase it merges physical energy with emotional and spiritual. Indian philosophy suggests that the realm of the 'living and the divine are one in essence' and one way to affirm the underlying unity of the two is through dance.
